UC Placement Tests (Freshmen Only)

English Placement Test

How incoming freshmen can satisfy the systemwide Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) depends on the UC campus they will attend and/or qualifying test scores and grades they have earned:

You can satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement by earning qualifying test scores and grades, passing the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) or following campus-specific procedures if your campus offers an alternative to the AWPE.

If you intend to enroll at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Riverside or UC San Diego, you may fulfill your Entry Level Writing Requirement with the Analytical Writing Placement Exam.

If you intend to enroll at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara or UC Santa Cruz, you will need to review your campus’s instructions for meeting the Entry Level Writing Requirement.

The AWPE 2022 exam will be held on Saturday, May 21. Please do not pay the exam fee unless you receive the exam notification email noting the fee is due.

Math Placement Test

There is no systemwide math placement test. Math placement test requirements vary between UC campuses and often by major. You should inquire whether you need to take a math placement test during orientation.

Can a student satisfies ELWR by taking a course in community college course this summer before starting university (e.g. uc Berkeley) this fall? Is it going to be too late? Some articles say “you have to send the transcript in before July 1st”, if that’s the case, it will be too late since summer community college course won’t finish at that time.

I believe you can skip the AWPE if you plan to satisfy it another way. I would recommend that you contact the admissions office through your portal to double check (I’m relatively certain the UCs are not going to penalize you for missing the test, but you should probably check and not just skip out on it without telling anyone).

How about if I take AWPE, but not pass it, can I still go to a community college to fulfill the reequipment?
In another word, if I could not pass AWPE, I have to go to college and take CWR1A

The test is $110. Just ask the admissions office if you can skip the test because you plan to enroll in a community college English class this summer.

If I have gotten a 3 or higher on AP Lang and/or AP Lit, would I still have to take the placement exam
