Review the Waitlist FAQ Carefully
One parent pointed out to me that in the UCSD Freshman Waitlist FAQ, the campus stated that it will NOT guarantee housing for students admitted AFTER May 1. This is a new change from prior years. I scanned the FAQs that are publicly available and I think most UCs are still guaranteeing housing for waitlisted students, but make sure you read the entire document for each UC campus where you will opt in for the waitlist so you don’t get any nasty surprises.

Thank god this changed for the class of 2020!
I’m leery of wording like “if you submit your housing application by the designated deadline as indicated on MyApplication.” Check with the housing office to find out if students admitted from the waitlist have a separate deadline.
I don’t know if you will see this Ms. Sun, but I was curious if you knew what the UCSD waitlists statistics were for the past few years. I’m mainly interested in the amount admitted from the waitlist and for some reason, can’t seem to find any data! It would be really appreciated.
The link for the Fall 2015 numbers is in All Things Admission Decision Related (Decision Timeline, Waitlist, Etc.) (but the Fall 2015 numbers were out of whack because the waitlist was essentially used as hostage while the system negotiated the budget with the state; that should make a potentially very interesting/boring movie). The Fall 2014 numbers can be found at Fall 2014 (Last Year) Frosh Waitlist/Appeal/Cancellation Numbers (from that post, you can following the link to Fall 2013, and from Fall 2013 you can get to Fall 2012).
