Berkeley “Early Decision” Update

Received an email from UC Berkeley today (it was sent out to counselors who signed up for updates):

Greetings Colleagues,

I hope your new year is off to a strong start. We are closing in towards the end of our Freshman application review and wanted to provide a quick update on what is next in the process.

A small number of freshmen applicants will be admitted during the month of February. Students who do not receive a decision in February will still be under review as the majority of our applicants will hear from us on March 29, 2018. Last year, only 13% of our total Fall 2017 admits were notified of their admission in February 2017, the majority of whom were candidates for our Regents’ & Chancellor’s scholarship.

Additionally, as we approach decision day, we tend to see an uptick in application withdrawal requests. If you know of students who have been admitted via Early Decision at another university and are happily committed, please encourage them to withdraw their application to UC Berkeley prior to March 1 so that we can confirm the withdrawal before decision release. The withdrawal form is live in their MAP@Berkeley portal at this time.

Kind Regards,

Amy W. Jarich
Assistant Vice Chancellor & Director of Admissions
UC Berkeley

In case you are curious, last year’s “early decisions” went out on Friday, February 10, 2017. If Berkeley stays on the same schedule, this year’s “early decisions” should come out this Friday, February 9, 2018.

* I put “early decisions” in quotes because they are not technically early decisions (there is a common definition associated with this phrase, which is not applicable here); Berkeley actually calls them “Early Notification.”
