CA State Audit Accused UCs of Mismanaging Funds

A state audit, released on Tuesday (4/25/2017), accused the UC system of hoarding millions of dollars while seeking to raise tuition. I had thought the UCs were incompetent, but apparently I underestimated them (deliberate budget manipulation, which the audit accused the UCs of doing, takes high-level skills).

Head over to the California State Auditor website for the full report (the title page literally says “The University of California Office of the President: It Failed to Disclose Tens of Millions in Surplus Funds, and Its Budget Practices Are Misleading“).

I firmly believe the UCs need to have more accountability to Californians (currently the UCs are not accountable to anyone but themselves, that is just begging for corruption). The UCs have a very powerful lobby that has eviscerated every attempt to bring the system under state control (does anyone remember SCA 1? No? That’s the UC lobby at work). I’m not saying state control is the solution, but there has to be some checks and balances in place so the UCs don’t run rampant with their absolute power to self-govern.
