Approved 2021-22 CA State Budget Requires UCs to Replace Nonresident Admits with CA Admits

Update (7/31/2021): The actual plan to make UCs reduce nonresident enrollment is part of a postsecondary education trailer bill for the 2021-2022 budget (AB 132, under Section 93000).

According to the LA Times, the newly approved California state budget is requiring Berkeley, UCLA and UCSD to “replace 900 out-of-state students with California students each year” and the time frame was clarified by the Daily Californian (UC Berkeley’s student newspaper) as “every year from the 2022-23 academic year through 2025” (further clarified in Floor Report of the 2021-22 Budget as 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025).

According to the Floor Report of the 2021-22 Budget, the money is “to reduce nonresident enrollment to 18% of the undergraduate student body, replacing about 900 nonresident students with California students annually.”
