Thank you for the updates, Ms. Sun.

I have a quick question. Is it possible that the UCSB College of Engineering is more competitive than UCLA’s or Berkeley’s. I was offered admission by UCSB, but not to the College of Engineering. I noticed that UCLA’s has 6,000, Berkeley’s has 4,000, and UCSB’s only has 1,500 undergrads. Thank you again!

UCSB engineering program is tiny and may not be the best for students who are not super driven and self-motivated. Some of the required courses are only offered once a year, so students who cannot track their progress and/or organize their schedule with diligence/precision will end up delaying their graduation by a year or more.

I am growing discouraged by the admissions decisions. My son received his second waitlist option for UCSB (UCI was the other). The uncertainty is what is challenging. Do you recommend opting into the waitlists sooner or later? Trying to stay hopeful…

I think the UCs are over-correcting for the huge increase in applications and the decisions are a mess so far (UCs are not very good at managing public opinion or enrollment). My recommendation would be to wait for all of the decisions to come out before your son begins planning his next steps. But he may opt-in now for the waitlist; there is no penalty if he chooses another college later and opting in will not affect his application at the other UCs.

I anticipate most UCs will admit very few students upfront and put a large number of students on waitlist. Students should expect to end up on waitlist at multiple campuses. There’s not much anyone can do but to wait and see how things shake out. Keep in mind that the decisions are not about your son’s achievements or qualifications, but more about how poorly UCs manage the admissions process.

I recently got an email from UCSB stating that I’m invited to their Virtual Chancellor Reception, does this mean anything?

The reception is meant to be a recruitment event to get you interested in, and commit to enroll at, UCSB.

Is UCSB a good school for pre-med?

There is dedicated Health Professions Advising, a part of the Pre-Professional Advising Office for students and alumni. I imagine having dedicated resources to support your pursuit will make the process smoother.

Can I write a LOCI if I got waitlisted at UCSB? I know UCI explicitly stated in their letter that they do not accept them, but I haven’t seen any UCSB related info. Thank you so much!

Generally, any mail you send to the admissions office won’t be reviewed (mostly because they don’t have a good way of matching the letter to your application file and also because of COVID). Electronic communication probably won’t be reviewed either (and will likely irritate the admission officers).
