Irvine Engineering TAG Requirement Change

UCI quietly changed the TAG requirements for engineering majors (at least I didn’t hear anything about it until a student brought it up today). You can find the new requirements at Transfer Requirements By School (everyone who is transferring Fall 2018 or later should follow the new requirements).

Essentially UCI has brought its requirements in alignment with the “transfer pathways” for engineering majors. Expect these types of adjustments to happen throughout the system (most likely adjustments up to increase the preparation; campuses are not as likely to downgrade more rigorous preparation already in place).

Can a student combine CC credits and AP credits to meet transfer requirements?

Yes, your community college will tell you which courses you can skip with AP credits. There are some traps though; for example, I vaguely recall Berkeley not allowing students to skip the first half of calculus even with passing AP scores (haven’t looked into that for a while so I don’t know if that is still true). Carefully check if you have AP credits for your major prep coursework, as sometimes UCs will not allow students to skip those (or require high scores to skip them, such as 4s or 5s). Your community college transfer center will be better equipped to advise you on something like that (sometimes the counselors are not up-to-date on the nitty-gritty requirements).
