Fall 2014 Transfer Waitlist/Appeal/Cancellation Numbers

These numbers were obtained during the UC Counselor Conference back in September 2014 … I got up and asked for the numbers at the end of a panel presentation from admission directors of each campus. Remember that the waitlist numbers can change dramatically from one year to the next and the Fall 2014 numbers are not predictive of what will happen this year.

Trying to decipher the chart terms. What’s the difference between waitlist “offers” and “admits”? For example, UCSD just lists admits and SIRs, does that mean 256 students were waitlisted and 177 accepted from the list? Thanks
The UC campus would “offer” a certain number of waitlist options to students and only certain number of students will “opt-in” (some students may decide to go elsewhere). Students who are pulled from the waitlist are “admits.” The information I have is what was given out (I usually end up surprising/spooking the campus representatives at the counselor conferences with my questions, so oftentimes the information is incomplete; I ask the same questions every year so I honestly don’t know why they are still surprised/spooked). For UCSD, 256 students were pulled from the waitlist out of who knows how many offers/opt-ins; out of those 256, only 177 actually decided to enroll at UCSD.
Because I am waitlisted, UCD told me to put down my estimated spring senior grades using the “Additional Comments” section. There’s already a drop-down menu for my spring senior grades, but I don’t get what they mean by putting the grades in the Additional Comments section. Unless, the additional comments section is for clarification instead? Thanks.

You should only report official grades in the form (so for spring you should put “Planned”). Add your estimated spring grades in “additional comments.”
Is the additional comments section also available to explain situtations, such as a family hardship, besides estimated spring grades?
Of course. I can’t tell from the screenshot, but beware that there may be word/character limits.
For UCSD, when you say 275 appeals, does that number indicate how many appeals they received in total or how many students they accepted after appeal?
275 applicants appealed; from that 83 were admitted.
Is it best to both appeal and opt in from waitlist to better your chances?
If you appeal and are admitted are you obligated to enroll?
If the campus allows you to do both, you can; whether that would “better your chances” is debatable. You are not obligated to enroll if you are admitted on appeal.

I was just wondering because I thought it was a bit ambiguous, but is this just the waitlist, appeals, and cancellation for transfer students only? I’m an incoming freshmen coming out of high school, so I don’t know whether these statistics should apply to me or not. Thank you.

What are the chances of not being re admitted if you had your admissions cancelled last year. Do they check to see if you have applied and been admitted in the past?
If you are a transfer applicant, each admissions office automatically reviews your previous transfer application.
What if I got admitted through appeal after the SIR deadline and I have no back up school, does it mean I am doomed?
Or can I still changed the SIR after the deadline? Is the SIR deadline impossibly strict?
Is the appealing process first come first serve? Will it be better to send appealing letter asap?
You need to SIR with a backup school before June 1st (and forfeit the nonrefundable deposit if you are admitted on appeal). Appeal is not first come first serve.

I got waitlist from UCLA. Is admitted rate lower than other school?
Transfer waitlist is major-specific, so you are constrained by the behavior of the students admitted to your major (whether they choose to enroll or not).
For UC Irvine once you appeal do they take you off the waitlist?
No, you stay on the waitlist. In your portal you may only see that the appeal is under review; this is a limitation of the system and not an indication of your waitlist status.

I got into wait list of Irvine in Computer game design, however I feel that there is more chance to be accepted in alternate major(math). Will school consider alternate major for wait list students instead of major?
UCI will consider you for the alternate major. You may want to appeal and just indicate that you want to attend UCI and that you are happy with the math major if there is no room in computer game design.
What are the chance to be re admitted if your offer has been cancelled last year ? How does it gonna effect and does it effect wait list result?
For transfer applicants, previous transfer applications are reviewed when you apply again (but not if you applied as a freshman). In such cases, you should explain any discrepancies in your application.
UCLA’s waitlist column just notes that 25 students got in, is there an estimate for how many were placed on the waitlist? Thanks!
No … the campuses are generally reluctant to share those numbers (although some are more forthcoming than others).
If a student gets accepted off of the wait list, is there a chance that admissions may revoke that acceptance if the student drops a course in their Spring semester without notifying the school? I dropped my Biology class this Spring with a W because it was very overwhelming(I am taking a total of 6 classes.) Also I received a D in a Stats course in the Fall(which I made up with an A in the Winter,) but accidentally reported it as “non-passing.” Will that affect my acceptance? I am an Anthropology major (B.A.) and I’ve completed all of my pre-transfer major courses with fairly good grades.
That is definitely a possibility, especially if dropping the course affects your ability to meet the minimum unit requirement, IGETC, and/or if the course is a major prerequisite requirement. You will need to send an update to the UCs about the W and the D, and provide an explanation. Better to do it now rather than have it come back and bite you in August.
I have more than enough units. The class is not a requirement for my major and I’ve already fulfilled my IGETC requirements. Does that put me in a better position?
You should be ok.
Also, do I notify them by phone or through email?
Log into your applicant portal and there should be a link or a form that allows you report grade/schedule changes.
I just got accepted to UCSD off of the waitlist; however, I’m expecting to get a D in one of my class. It’s not a major, IGETC or any other requirement. I just took the class for fun. My major is Anthropology. Will they revoke my acceptance?
Can you withdraw from the class? Either way (withdrawal or D), you have to report it to UCSD and provide an explanation. The campus decides whether to extend or revoke your admission offer. If it is canceled, you have the option to file an appeal.
I am a transfer student from Univ Arizona and applied only at UCSB which is the school I want to attend as a music major but was rejected. I appealed but just recently received a letter on June 5th stating there was no more room. Does that mean had there been room I would have been accepted?? Also, is there still a chance that the decision might change by August once they know which students actually enroll. Can I enroll in community college and take a few courses and try to transfer that way next year. I was planning on retaking 2 classes at UCSB (through open university) that I had received D’s in my freshman year during an illness (which I explained in my appeal) and trying to reapply next year to UCSB and UCSD. I was also considering changing my major to Economics and Marketing with a minor in music. Would that make it more difficult? I currently have a 3.0 GPA from UA after having a very difficult freshman year due to illness.

Economics is very competitive at UCSB. I don’t know what your coursework from UA looks like so I cannot advise you on your best course of action.

I received straight A’s last year and 6 A’s and 2 B’s my sophomore year. I should have taken a medical leave of absence my freshman year but decided to tough it out but ended up with 6 D’s as a result of missing to many classes and 2 B’s. I repeated one of the classes (GRO) and received an A. I have decided to reapply as either a Music History major or as a Philosophy major. I moved to Santa Barbara a year ago and have a California Drivers license (and voted!).
1.) Can I apply as a California Resident?
2.) Do they keep the appeal applicants active up until August in case a spot opens up?
3.) Do you think I might have a chance if I reapply next year?

Question for you. I am transferring to UC Davis next year, but got an F in one of my major classes (communications) and have received a cancellation warning email. I’ve sent my explanation to my counselor and the admissions office, but do you know how likely it will be for my admissions offer to be rescinded? My overall GPA, minus that one class, is 3.14.
Communications is not selective, so you may still be admitted if you have a persuasive plead.
