Boost Your Academic Rigor (or Repeat a D or F Grade) with Online High School Courses This Spring!

Freaking out because you need to repeat a class you didn’t pass from the fall semester? Need to squeeze in another AP class to boost the rigor of your schedule? Want to improve your GPA? Enroll now for spring online classes!

Keep in mind that your local community college is usually your best bet (free if your counselor signs off on the enrollment), since there are plenty of online community college courses available (search for available online classes across the system at California Virtual Campus; narrow the “Institution Segment” to “California Community Colleges”). Online high school courses tend to be pricey, but they serve as an alternative if you need them (there are usually fewer hoops to jump through, just pay and take the classes).

A special note about Laboratory Science requirement: the UCs will NOT accept online high school courses for this subject (UCs will always accept online community college courses in Laboratory Science, provided that they are UC-transferable and 3+ semester or 4+ quarter units). I know some of the laboratory science courses appear to be UC-approved when you check the UC A-G Course List, but that means you are required to complete “teacher-supervised, hands-on lab component that accounts for at least 20 percent of class time” to receive credit for those courses. Stick to your high school or go to a community college to save yourself the headache.

There is a direct link to the UC-approved course list for each school below. Verify that the class you want to take is on the UC-approved course list. There are other UC-approved schools, but the ones in this list all have part-time enrollment options (you can take just one or two classes and not have to worry about admission or full-time enrollment, plus the school will issue a separate transcript if necessary – for example, your high school refuses to add the course to your transcript).

The schools are ordered by cost (based on yearlong AP courses), from lowest to highest.
