Berkeley Early Admission Notification (Freshman Applicants)

UC Berkeley sent acceptance offers to approximately 2,000 freshman applicants yesterday (Friday, February 9, 2018; this should come out to about 10% to 15% of the admitted pool for Fall 2018, the early notification pool last year was about 13% of the Fall 2017 admitted pool). The offers targeted high achieving students, many of them also offered interview to the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship. If you did not receive an acceptance offer, DO NOT WORRY, regular decisions will be released on March 29, 2018.

If you received an offer, you will have the option to choose a “freshman pathway.” The “freshman pathways” include programs Berkeley implemented in order to take the maximum number of students possible while alleviating classroom crowding. Here are the choices offered: Traditional Pathway (starting in the fall); Global Edge (summer in Berkeley, fall in UC London Center, spring in Berkeley); or Fall Program for Freshman (FPF). Keep in mind that Global Edge has an age restriction (you must be 18 years old by August 10, 2018) and students in FPF take classes that are separated from the main campus classes (might take more effort for you to fully integrate into campus/extracurricular activities – something to consider if you are really interested in things like being in a sorority or fraternity).

Congratulations to those of you who were admitted! Those of you who haven’t heard, hang in there!

From what I heard, the interviews are conducted by faculty members and the questions varied greatly (they evolve based on your conversation).

HI: Does getting accepted early mean that you get a head start on the housing/course selection process? Do these students who are accepted early get any advantage over the others (other than the early notification?). IE: what are they getting?
    Thank you.

The early notification seems to go out to the highly qualified students that Berkeley really wants. But I don’t think Berkeley is offering anything extra (aside from the Regents’ and Chancellor’s scholarships for high achieving students) other than the “preferential” early notification.

Hi. Is it possible that you get an early acceptance offer but no nomination for the scholarship?

Yes. This usually means Berkeley really wants you to attend but you are not in the top ~1% of the applicant pool (the top ~1% gets the scholarship offers).

Do international and out of state students who get accepted early also get notified early for regents? When do they notify OOS students about regents?

Domestic out-of-state applicants should get interview invites at the same time as the admission offer. International students are not interviewed, but should get notification at the same time as the admission offer.
